about
for the last six months i've been playing myself this song before i go to bed, alternating between fear and hope, chilling alienation and profound solidarity. as i left the rally last night, i understood more clearly than ever that these oscillations live in all of us, that we can overcome them together and build the world to come. maybe i'm crazy, but right now i believe. i have so much love for everyone knocking doors and making phone calls, for comrades working on campaigns both national and local.
i cobbled this demo together from software synthesizers and voice memos last night because i was too hopeful to sleep.

lyrics
it's okay to be happy
when our world's turned so bad
because sadness can't be all we have
even as the water's warning
and we're warming to a mourning
there are people who are holding my hand
it's okay to take action
nothing too big, too small
sometimes we hold more power than we're told
every councilmember's lying
when they tell you they're supplying
solutions for the city they've sold
it's okay to feel nothing
numb, nothing at all
because joy feels so wrong before the fall
it's a question, reproduction
how the world to come might function
we're living then we're dying, that's all
it's okay to take a breather
when everybody’s burning out
inhale and let the air fill our lungs
except in fire season
when the oxygen we're breathing
is just ash obscured by the sun
it's okay to love deeply
to trust and to commit
to pain, to risk, to fear, to losing it all
through theft and alienation
we're still fighting for relations
that free us from feeling so small
it’s okay to feel broken
that’s just about right
when darkness is swallowing the light
but there's a flicker then a feeling
that there's something worth revealing
when morning emerges from the night
